Setting and story

The game is set in the familiar gloomy, steampunk-inspired 'City', chronologically bridging the original trilogy and the 2014 reboot. Players embody Magpie, an orphan thief who acquires a mechanical eye containing the spirit of legendary thief Garrett, whose voice (again performed by Stephen Russell) mentors her. Together, they work to undermine Baron Ulysses Northcrest, who is amassing powerful relics for sinister purposes.

Gameplay and mechanics

Thief VR is built around physical stealth in VR, crouching, leaning, and peeking around corners. Darkness is still your best friend, sticking to shadows, putting out fires and avoiding noisy surfaces all reduce detection. Players pickpocket guards, crack safes, and infiltrate multi-path levels, often rewarding thorough exploration.

Magpie wields a bow with classic Thief-style arrow types: standard arrows for combat, rope arrows for reaching high places, and water arrows for extinguishing flames. Glyph Vision highlights enemies and interactable objects. Some guards can be silently taken down; others are invulnerable, pushing players toward pure ghost-style stealth. Objects like bottles or loot can be thrown to create distractions, and the microphone can even be used to literally blow out candles.
